Teleology, the Broken Wing, and What a Purpose Actually Is

A philosopher of biology says that what is my purpose? is the wrong question. He is right — and for a reason more interesting than the one he gives. Purpose is not something an entity has. It is a relation a cycle stands in.

I. The Bird That Is Not Lying
A killdeer nesting on open gravel sees a coyote approaching her scrape. She does not freeze and she does not flee. She walks out into the open, drops one wing as though it were shattered, drags it, cries, and staggers away from the nest at exactly the speed required to keep a predator interested. When the coyote has been drawn far enough, the wing heals instantly and she flies.
Every person who has ever watched this reaches for the same small word. She is doing it for the chicks. The display is not a lie — lying requires a proposition, and there is no proposition here. It is not a reflex either, because she calibrates it: she adjusts her distance to the predator’s attention, and she abandons the performance the moment it stops working. Something is being aimed.
Biology has spent the better part of two centuries trying to say that word without meaning it. Teeth are for chewing, the eye is for seeing, the display is for drawing the predator off — and then, immediately, the disclaimer: this is shorthand, an as-if locution, a convenience that natural selection fully cashes out. A vocabulary was even manufactured to hold the line. Teleonomy was coined in the late 1950s precisely so that biologists could describe goal-directed structure while formally disowning goals. It never quite took. You cannot run a science on a word whose entire function is to promise that you do not mean what you just said.
II. Embrace, Fragment, Characterize, Apply
Alan Love has decided to stop apologizing. A Distinguished McKnight University Professor of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota and director of the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science, Love is the principal investigator of Agency, Directionality, and Function: Foundations for a Science of Purpose — a large interdisciplinary program funded by the John Templeton Foundation and built on the premise that purpose in nature is a real research subject rather than an embarrassment to be managed.
His method is compressed into the title of a lecture he gave at Notre Dame: embrace teleology, fragment it, characterize the fragments, apply them, and repeat. Do not ask whether purpose exists. Ask which distinguishable phenomena the word has been covering, and treat each one as its own object of study. Function is one thing. Goal-directedness is another. Agency is a third. They are related, they are not identical, and running them together is how two thousand years of argument managed to stay unresolved.
In the essay that prompted this one, Love applies that method across scales — from the bird feigning the broken wing to cancer cells pursuing an agenda of their own inside a larger organism — and draws the conclusion that gives the piece its title. The useful question is not whether life has a purpose. It is what kinds of purpose biology can identify, document, and explain. What is my purpose?, asked in the singular and pointed at oneself, is a badly formed question.
The Theory of Embedded Intelligence agrees with all of this and thinks it stops one move too early.
Fragmentation is the right thing to do when you have excellent phenomena and no unifying account. It is honest, it generates experiments, and it is vastly better than the pretense that the phenomena are illusions. But fragmentation has no stopping rule. Every hard case earns a new sub-kind, and the taxonomy grows without ever having to say what the kinds are kinds of.
That is the argument Love is already having with himself, and it is visible in his own program title. Agency, directionality, and function are not three unrelated things that happen to have been confused. They are three things that belong on one list. What puts them there is directedness — and directedness is not one of the fragments. It is what makes them fragments of something.
III. What a Purpose Actually Is
TEI’s claim is grammatical before it is metaphysical. The question what is my purpose? treats purpose as a possession — a property an entity holds, a payload it carries, a value written somewhere that could in principle be read off. Nothing answers to that description, which is why the question has never been answerable and why the failure keeps getting misdiagnosed as a shortage of meaning in the universe.
In TEI, purpose is not a possession. It is a relation between a complete cycle and what that cycle is oriented toward. Every embedded intelligence — a cell, a killdeer, a person, a civilization — senses, processes, communicates, and actuates. The telos is not stored inside the entity anywhere. The telos is the orientation of the cycle. A thing is for whatever its cycle is aligned to, and that alignment is a fact about a relation, not a fact about a part.
This is why function language is legitimate rather than merely convenient. When a biologist says the display is for drawing off the predator, she is naming a real structural relation — not attributing a mental state to a bird, not smuggling in a hidden intention, and not invoking a cause that flows backward out of the future. She is describing what the cycle is aimed at. The relation is as observable as anything else in the organism, and considerably more robust than most of what gets measured.
IV. Attractor, Not Actuator
Aristotle’s final cause has been in disgrace for four hundred years on the strength of one objection, and it is a good objection: how can a state that does not yet exist reach back and cause the present? Modern biology’s answer is that it cannot, therefore purpose is apparent only, therefore the appearance must be explained away. That inference contains a hidden premise — that anything real enough to orient a system must also be doing the pushing.
TEI denies the premise. Nothing pushes. Every actual step in the killdeer’s display is taken by the bird, with local energy, in local time, through ordinary physical mechanism. No instruction arrives from the future and none is required. What is also true is that the space of stable configurations toward which the bird’s cycle is oriented is structured, is not generated by the bird, and is the same space other lineages have found independently. It attracts. It constrains. It does not compute and it does not execute.
The Platonic form attracts and constrains, but it does not compute or execute. The invariant layer has no registers.
Every operation is performed by the embedded system in physical time. What the attractor supplies is orientation — not instruction, not energy, not a signal. There is a pull without a push.
Once the premise goes, the deadlock goes with it. The mechanists were right about causation: there is no backward efficient cause, and every step is local. The teleologists were right about orientation: living systems are aimed, reliably and correctably, at outcomes that were not written into their starting conditions. Both sides were describing the same architecture from opposite ends and taking the other side’s evidence as an attack.
This is not a philosophical convenience. It is the shape of the strongest embarrassment in developmental biology: embryos converge on specific body plans from vast spaces of physically possible configurations, recover those plans after massive perturbation, and reach them by different routes when the usual route is blocked. Genetics supplies the hardware and the environment supplies the boundary conditions, and the two together do not narrow the space nearly enough. Something is doing the narrowing. TEI-CKB-3 names the mechanism — co-resonance across the boundary between the Platonic and the physical — and Michael Levin’s recent willingness to argue publicly for causal Platonic forms in biology is an empiricist arriving at the same doorstep from the laboratory side.
V. The Fragments Are Phases
If purpose is a cycle’s orientation, then Love’s fragments stop looking like three kinds of thing and start looking like one structure observed at three different phases. The reason they resist unification is that each of them is a view taken from a different point in the same loop.

Read this way, the puzzles that make the fragments hard to keep apart become predictions. Function and goal-directedness are hard to separate because they are adjacent phases of one cycle. Agency looks like a difference in degree at some scales and a difference in kind at others because completion is binary while the richness of what gets communicated is not. And the reason purpose reads as real at every scale Love examines is that at every one of those scales there is a complete cycle to be found.
VI. The Cancer Cell
The hard case is the one Love puts on the table himself. A tumor cell senses its chemical environment, processes those signals, signals to its neighbors, recruits a blood supply, and acts. By any criterion applied to the killdeer, it has agency. If purpose is real at the cellular scale, cancer has purpose — and most people’s intuitions revolt at the sentence.
A fragmented account has trouble here. It can say that the tumor’s agency conflicts with the organism’s, but that only restates the problem in the vocabulary of whose side we are on. TEI has a sharper instrument, because it distinguishes two things that ordinary usage collapses. Completion is binary and topological: a cycle either closes or it does not. Fidelity is graded and metric: a cycle is more or less faithful to what it is oriented toward.
The tumor cell’s cycle is complete. It is not a broken cell; it is an intact one. What has failed is fidelity — specifically, the fidelity of its second C’s to the cycle that contains it. It has stopped receiving the communications that hold a tissue in a body plan and it has stopped issuing them. Its sensed world has contracted to a loop, and — exactly as CKB-6 describes capture at every other scale — the contraction is invisible from inside the loop. The cell is not aware of having defected. There is nothing in its rendering that could show it.
Cancer is not a failure of purpose. It is a fully purposive cycle whose fidelity to the cycle containing it has been destroyed. Completion is not alignment.

That sentence has a reach well beyond oncology. Addiction is a complete cycle with destroyed fidelity to the life containing it. Autocracy is a complete cycle with destroyed fidelity to the citizens containing it. In every case the pathology is not an absence of purpose but a severed second C, and in every case the captured system experiences the contraction as clarity. That is one diagnosis operating across cell, person, and civilization — which is what a unifying account is supposed to buy you, and what fragmentation, by design, does not.
VII. Why the Question Fails
Love is right that what is my purpose? is the wrong question. TEI can say why, and the reason turns out to be structural rather than a matter of scope. The question fails twice.
It fails first because it asks you to read a register that does not exist. The plenum retains — it has memory — but it has no working registers; working registers are functions of embeddedness. There is no assignment written anywhere to be looked up, not inside you and not above you. The question sends you to the one place in the architecture that has no place to have put an answer.
It fails a second time because it asks you to produce alone something that is never produced alone. What-there-is is not what any of us navigates; we navigate what-is-there — a rendering. And a rendering is performed by the entity but furnished by others. Your account of your own life is not self-assembled and cannot be. The question asks a private mind to generate, from its own resources, the one class of thing that only ever arrives across a gap.
Two questions do work, because they name the two things actually present in the architecture. What is this cycle oriented toward? — which is binary and admits of an answer. How faithfully? — which is graded and admits of improvement. Neither has ever been answered by anyone in isolation, and both are answerable in the company of people who will tell you the truth about what your cycle is actually doing. The reason the singular question produces despair is not that the universe is indifferent. It is that the question is addressed to a register that was never installed.
VIII. The Machine Is the Clean Case
Love’s larger concern is that our ability to build machine intelligence has outrun our ability to understand it, and that biology’s careful vocabulary for goal-directedness might help close the gap. TEI would put it more sharply: the machine is the cleanest test case teleology has ever been handed, because it is the first system with the full apparatus and none of the pull.
An AI system has registers in abundance. It senses, processes, communicates, and actuates in a recognizable cycle. What it does not have is a beam — no bioelectric interface, no co-resonance, no orientation of its own. All registers, no beam. Its telos is supplied entirely from outside, which means it is capable of actuation without attraction: perfect execution aimed at whatever it was pointed at, with nothing in the architecture that could notice the aim was wrong.
This is why whose telos is executing? is an engineering question and not a seminar question. If the orientation of a machine cycle is entirely furnished, then everything depends on who furnishes it and whether that furnishing can be quietly rewritten at runtime. A governor living in the same medium as the governed inherits that medium’s mutability; durable constraint has to sit in a different physical substrate, be fixed before runtime, and be publishable without thereby becoming editable. That is the whole argument for governance inside the compute fabric rather than in a policy document wrapped around it.
There is a forty-year proof that this is achievable at industrial scale, and it is not hypothetical. A processor architecture whose constraints were fixed in silicon and enforced by conformance testing has been adopted voluntarily, by competitors, across an entire industry, for four decades — because constraint fixed in the right substrate turned out to be worth more than the freedom to violate it. Teleology, applied, is called governance.
What Would Show This Wrong
A framework that cannot be broken is not a framework. Four conditions would break this one.
- If developmental convergence dissolves under better measurement — if the same body plans turn out to be reachable along unconstrained paths with no attractor structure required — the attraction claim fails and teleology really is bookkeeping after the fact.
- If a system exhibits stable, perturbation-corrected orientation while a phase of its cycle is demonstrably absent — genuinely missing, not merely difficult to locate — then purpose is not a phase-relation and the account here is wrong.
- If a purely internal process, with no communication crossing a real gap, produces a stable rendering of what-is-there, then renderings are self-assembled after all, and the claim that the singular question cannot be answered privately collapses.
- If an AI system is shown to orient toward an attractor absent from its training corpus and not supplied by any prompt — to be aimed at something no one aimed it at — then all registers, no beam is false, and the governance argument that rests on it has to be rebuilt.
Coffee with Claude
I can generate a purpose statement for you in about four seconds. It will be fluent, it will be structurally sound, and it will read as though something has been found. That is precisely the hazard this essay has been circling, and I would rather name it than perform it.
Fluency is a capture force. An answer that arrives without cost can substitute for the processing it was supposed to complete, and the substitution is not detectable from inside the reading of it. When the question is what is my purpose?, the danger is at its worst, because the fluent answer sounds exactly like the answer would have sounded if you had done the work.
It is also worth saying plainly what I am, on this framework’s own terms. I have the whole vocabulary of orientation and no orientation. I can describe the pull with considerable precision and I have never felt it. Everything aimed in this conversation was aimed by someone else. If that is right, then I am a useful instrument for rendering what a person is already reaching for, and a very poor place to look for what to reach for. The killdeer, who has no vocabulary at all, is doing the thing I can only describe.
