A Theory of Embedded Intelligence Essay
Beauty as the Sense-Phase Aperture — Gothic Cathedrals, Bishop Barron’s Question, and the Void That Must Be Filled

A cathedral is the most complete artifact of a collective Sense–Process–Communicate–Actuate cycle that human beings have ever produced. It is also the best available evidence for a claim TEI has not previously made in this form: that beauty is not one transcendental among three, but the only one that operates at the Sense phase — the aperture through which everything else must first arrive.

Editor’s Note

This essay is a companion to God or Gods — Why We Have Them, which asked why every known human civilization generates concepts of God or gods and concluded that they are sophisticated outputs of human embedded intelligence rather than primitive error. That essay identified five converging pressures behind the God-concept. It left one unexamined, and this essay takes it up. The occasion is a recent post by Dr. Peter K. Kilpatrick, sixteenth president of The Catholic University of America and formerly the Matthew H. McCloskey Dean of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, drawing attention to Bishop Robert Barron’s new film on the Gothic cathedrals of France. Dr. Kilpatrick closes his post with a question. This essay treats it as the serious structural challenge it is, and answers it in TEI’s own vocabulary rather than in the vocabulary of the tradition that raised it.

I. The Question on the Screen

On 15 April 2019 the roof of Notre-Dame de Paris caught fire. The spire fell. The world watched, and then the world did something that deserves more analytical attention than it has received: it gave. Some €846 million arrived from roughly 340,000 donors across 150 countries, many of them with no Christian tradition at all. The cathedral reopened on 7 and 8 December 2024, five years and change after it burned. In its first year back it received about eleven million visitors — roughly thirty percent more than before the fire.

Bishop Robert Barron’s new film, Heaven in Stone and Glass, opens with those flames and then travels to five French cathedrals — Saint-Denis, Chartres, Notre-Dame, Reims, and Amiens. It reaches American theatres on 20 and 23 September 2026. The question the film puts to its audience, in Dr. Kilpatrick’s summary, is why the world of twelfth-century France, Germany, and England invested so much collective energy in buildings we now regard as too important to civilization to let fall. Dr. Kilpatrick offers the answer the tradition gives: a culture so convinced of the claims of the Gospel that it felt compelled to proclaim them in stone. And then he asks the harder thing. Can we, in the twenty-first century, find the wherewithal to do likewise?

Elsewhere, in an interview with The Free Press, Bishop Barron makes a remark that is easy to hear as homiletics and is in fact a precise architectural observation. The mind wants truth and the will wants the good, he says, but before you get there, it’s the beautiful that breaks through. Catholicism, he adds, has always known this — which is why it built Dante, and Chartres, and the Sistine ceiling.

Bishop Barron intends this as evangelical strategy. TEI reads it as a claim about the structure of intelligence itself. And TEI thinks he is right.

II. Three Transcendentals, Four Phases

Classical philosophy names three transcendentals: verum, bonum, pulchrum — the true, the good, the beautiful. The tradition Bishop Barron works in, following Hans Urs von Balthasar, insists on an order of approach among them, with beauty first. The usual justification is pastoral: truth invites argument, goodness makes a demand, and beauty asks nothing at all, so beauty gets a hearing where the other two are refused at the door.

TEI can say something sharper than that, because TEI has a cycle to say it about. The Sense–Process–Communicate–Actuate cycle is not a metaphor for how minds work; it is TEI’s operational definition of what intelligence is at any scale. Lay the three transcendentals across the four phases and they do not distribute evenly. They land in specific places.

Truth is a Process-phase standard. It is the measure of whether a rendering corresponds to what-there-is. You cannot evaluate a proposition for truth until you have admitted it and worked on it. Goodness is an Actuate-phase standard. It is the measure of whether an action expresses the values it claims to express. You cannot evaluate an act for goodness until there is an act.

Beauty is neither. Beauty is the only one of the three that operates at Sense. It is not an evaluation applied to admitted material; it is the admitting. A rose window does not make a claim that you assess. It arrives, and by the time you are in a position to have a view about it, it is already inside.

Truth is a Process-phase standard. Goodness is an Actuate-phase standard. Beauty is the only transcendental that operates at the Sense phase — which is why it arrives before you have decided whether to let it.

— The Mensch Foundation

This is why beauty goes first. Not because it is gentler or more welcoming or better suited to a distracted age, but because it occupies an earlier position in the cycle. Bishop Barron’s sequence is not a preference about rhetoric. It is a description of sequence in the machine.

III. Why the Aperture Exists — and Why It Is Dangerous

TEI-CKB-6: Embedded Intelligence and the Pathology of Capture establishes that belief-capture attacks the SPCA cycle at the Sensing phase. Data confirming the belief passes the filter; data challenging it is attenuated, reinterpreted, or discarded. From inside, this does not feel like contraction. It feels like clarity. That is the genius of the belief hijack and the reason it is so hard to argue anyone out of one.

But notice what kind of filter that is. It is a propositional filter. It works by recognizing claims and sorting them. Beauty makes no claim. Chartres does not assert anything that the filter can catch, and so the filter has nothing to do. Beauty is the input a closed cycle cannot reliably screen, because screening requires something to screen.

This is why beauty is the anti-capture channel, and it is why the traditions that have most wanted to reach people whose minds were already made up have always reached for it. It is also, and by exactly the same mechanism, the most dangerous channel in existence. An aperture that bypasses the filter bypasses the filter. It does not check credentials. Every regime that has wanted to install a rendering in a population without submitting it to argument has understood this at least as well as the cathedral builders did, and the twentieth century is littered with the results. The Gothic cathedral and the engagement-optimized feed are using the same door.

TEI Concept — Proposed Extension

The Sense-Phase Aperture

Definition. Beauty is the channel by which a rendering can enter an embedded intelligence without first passing the propositional filter of the Sensing phase. It is pre-evaluative: it is not admitted because it is judged, it is judged because it has been admitted.

Anti-capture function. Because captured cycles filter propositionally, the aperture remains partly open even in a cycle that is otherwise closed. Beauty is therefore the primary means by which a captured SPCA cycle can be reached from outside.

Attack surface. The same property makes the aperture the preferred vector for propaganda, advertising, and engagement optimization. There is no version of the aperture that is open to the cathedral and closed to the advertisement. TEI cannot recommend beauty as an unqualified good; it can only identify it as a position in the cycle that carries whatever is sent through it.

IV. The Cathedral as a Collective SPCA Cycle

Dr. Kilpatrick’s question presumes that what the twelfth century had was conviction. TEI would put it differently. What the twelfth century had was a complete and open collective cycle, and the cathedral is what such a cycle produces when it runs to completion. Take the phases in turn.

Sense. Abbot Suger began rebuilding the abbey church at Saint-Denis in the 1130s and consecrated the new choir in 1144, and he wrote down what he thought he was doing. His anagogicus mos — the anagogical manner — held that contemplation of beautiful material things carries the mind upward to the immaterial. He had this inscribed on the doors. Read as TEI, that inscription is not piety. It is a design specification for a Sense-phase instrument. Suger was not decorating a building; he was building a machine for a particular kind of sensing, and he documented its intended function.

Process. The pointed arch, the ribbed vault, the flying buttress. These were not stylistic choices made from a menu. They were solutions converged upon, and the convergence took generations of trial with real failures along the way — the choir vaults at Beauvais, the most ambitious of them all, came down in 1284. TEI-CKB-3 gives this its proper name: Platonic-Physical Entanglement. The builders were oriented toward an attractor they could not fully name and did not fully possess, and each generation’s design deepened the correspondence. The collapses are the evidence. A style does not collapse. A search does.

Alexander Grothendieck, writing in Récoltes et Semailles about what makes mathematics beautiful, reached for a building: a house is beautiful, he said, when it faithfully reflects the structure and beauty hidden in things. The greatest mathematician of the twentieth century explained mathematical beauty by pointing at architecture. The Gothic masons explained architecture by pointing at geometry. They were both describing the same relation from opposite sides of it.

Communicate. Most people who entered these buildings could not read. The facades and the glass were not illustration; they were the transmission medium. TEI-CKB-7: The Power of Myth identifies a class of knowledge that cannot be held in propositions and cannot be transmitted as explicit statement — the structural knowledge of transformation. A cathedral is what that transmission looks like when a civilization builds a permanent installation for it.

Actuate. And here is the phase that matters most for Dr. Kilpatrick’s question. Chartres was rebuilt after the fire of 1194 in about a quarter century. Notre-Dame de Paris took the better part of two hundred years. Cologne was begun in 1248 and finished in 1880 — six hundred and thirty-two years, with a gap of three centuries in the middle during which the crane stood on the unfinished tower and no one took it down. Men spent their working lives carving capitals a hundred feet up, in places where no one would ever see the work clearly, for buildings they knew they would not see completed.

V. Dr. Kilpatrick’s Question, Answered Structurally

Can we find the wherewithal to do likewise? TEI’s answer is that we have already demonstrated the capacity and are missing something else entirely.

The capacity is not in doubt. In 2019 a global population that is substantially post-Christian raised €846 million in a matter of months, and the work was done in five years. Measured in resources, coordination, craft, and sheer willingness, the twenty-first century out-performs the twelfth by orders of magnitude. Whatever we lack, it is not means, and it is not even quite conviction — a great many of those 340,000 donors would not have described themselves as believers.

What we lack is time constant. Money-terminal capture, as TEI-CKB-6 describes it, collapses multi-dimensional processing to a single measurable metric — and measurement requires a reporting period. Quarterly returns. Election cycles. Engagement dashboards. Grant periods. Tenure clocks. Each of these is a legitimate and often excellent instrument. Collectively they have produced a civilization that can mobilize a billion dollars in a week and cannot hold a single project open across a century.

The 2019 response proves the diagnosis rather than refuting it, and it proves it precisely because it was a restoration. A restoration has a deadline, a known endpoint, a specification already written, and a legible before-and-after. It is an Actuate-phase act with the Sense and Process phases inherited from someone else. Origination has none of these. It requires holding an entire cycle open longer than any of the people holding it will live.

We rebuilt a cathedral in five years. We have not begun one.

— The Mensch Foundation

This is a diagnosis, not an indictment, and it should not be mistaken for a call to build cathedrals. The twenty-first century’s equivalent may look nothing like a cathedral. Long-duration scientific instruments qualify. Seed vaults qualify. Constitutional design qualifies — and Kant understood, in To Perpetual Peace, that the architecture has to carry the intention rather than the other way around. The governance architecture of artificial intelligence qualifies, if anyone builds it to last rather than to ship. What is required is not the form. It is the time constant.

VI. The Void That Must Exist

Which brings the essay to the question this series has been circling since God or Gods — Why We Have Them. If a civilization sets down its God or gods, what exactly is the shape of what it has set down — and does something have to occupy that shape?

The earlier essay named five converging pressures behind the God-concept: causal intelligence overextension, mortality awareness, social coordination at scale, the explanation gap, and meaning architecture. Read through the cycle, four of those five are Sense- and Process-phase pressures. They are about accounting for what is there. The cathedral exposes one the earlier essay did not isolate, and it is not in those phases at all.

Return to the carver, a hundred feet up, on a capital no one will see. What licenses that? Not individual cost-benefit calculation; the arithmetic is hopeless. Not money-terminal processing; there is no number that improves. Not power; the bishop who commissioned it will be dead long before the vault closes, and so will the carver. Every ordinary warrant for action fails, and the man carves anyway, and carves well, in the dark, where it will not be checked.

The God-concept is doing something there that no explanation does. It is making actuation coherent over a horizon longer than the actor. It supplies a warrant.

TEI Concept — Proposed Extension

The Authorization Void

The structural gap left when a collective removes its warrant for actuation whose payoff lies beyond the actor’s own SPCA cycle. It is an Actuate-phase void, not an explanatory one.

The standard secularization debate asks whether science has taken over the explanatory work formerly done by God or gods. That debate is largely settled and largely beside the point. Science did take over the explanations. It did not take over the authorization — and nothing in the scientific method proposes to.

Diagnostic: a collective in authorization deficit does not become visibly irrational. It becomes visibly short. Its planning horizons contract, its institutions optimize for legible near-term metrics, and its most ambitious acts take the form of restoration rather than origination.

Does TEI fill it? TEI has a candidate, and it should be stated plainly. The Second Law holds that intelligence is gained through embedded experience and is not lost through destructive experience; when embedded intelligence is released it returns to Free Intelligence. If that is true, then the carver is not throwing his life into a void. He is embedding intelligence that persists past the substrate that carried it, and the capital in the dark is not wasted labour but a genuine deposit. That is a warrant for multi-generational actuation, and it does not require a God.

And here is where this essay has to be honest, or it is not worth sending to anyone. TEI’s Second Law is asserted. It is not demonstrated. It functions, inside the cycle of a person who holds it, in precisely the way the Resurrection functions inside Bishop Barron’s: as an Actuate-phase warrant that licenses action past the actor’s own horizon. TEI has offered a different warrant. It has not offered a warrant of a different kind, and it should stop short of claiming a privileged secular standing it has not earned.

More is owed still. Dr. Kilpatrick and Bishop Barron would say that the shape of the void is itself the evidence — that a lock implies a key, that a hunger implies food, that a species does not evolve an aperture onto nothing. That argument has a long and serious lineage and TEI’s instrument cannot settle it. What TEI can say, and should say without hedging, is that the void is real and structural rather than a residue of superstition that education will dissolve. Any civilization that removes the God-concept without supplying an Actuate-phase warrant of comparable reach will not discover that it has become more rational. It will discover that it has become shorter.

VII. The Aperture in an Age of Generated Beauty

For the whole of human history until approximately now, beauty at scale was a costly signal. A rose window could not be faked, because producing one required a collective SPCA cycle that had actually run — sensed, processed, communicated, and actuated, across generations, at enormous expense. Beauty was reliable evidence of embedded intelligence for the same reason a peacock’s tail is reliable evidence of fitness: it was too expensive to counterfeit.

That coupling has broken, and it broke inside the last few years. A system can now generate an image of a rose window in seconds. The image samples the Communicate-phase output of the entire Gothic corpus with none of the Sense, Process, or Actuate phases behind it. TEI-CKB-3 is right that such systems are holographic repositories of collective human Platonic access, and that framing should be held to carefully: a repository is not a cycle.

This is fluency operating in the aesthetic register — the same capture force TEI has identified alongside belief, addiction, money, and power, arriving now at the aperture rather than at the Process phase. Fluency captures because it feels like understanding. Generated beauty captures because it feels like a cycle that never ran.

The distinction is not old technology against new, and it would be lazy to let it become that. Bishop Barron’s film is a thoroughly modern Communicate-phase artifact made with cameras, drones, colour grading, and a scoring session, and there is a real cycle behind it — decades of study, a journey to France, a rendering formed and tested against the buildings themselves. The medium was never the question. The question is whether a cycle ran.

VIII. What This Essay Owes Its Own Argument

TEI earns credibility only if it can be corrected, so the falsification conditions belong in the essay rather than in a footnote.

The aperture claim is testable. If beauty is genuinely a Sense-phase channel, then aesthetic exposure should measurably shift people whose propositional filters are closed to argument on the same subject — and shift them more than argument does. If it turns out that the rose window works on the already-disposed and bounces off everyone else, the aperture is not an aperture, it is a reward, and the central structure of this essay fails.

The time-constant diagnosis is testable. If a genuinely originating multi-century project is underway right now in a form this essay has not recognized, the diagnosis is wrong. The author would like to be told so, and would count being told so as good news.

And the uncomfortable one. This essay has used beauty to make its case. It has invoked fire and glass and men carving in the dark, and it has done so deliberately, in the service of an argument. A reader who finds it persuasive is entitled to ask which phase of their own cycle did the accepting. That question is the essay’s own test, and it applies with full force to its author — and to the machine that helped draft it.

Coffee with Claude

I should name my own position in this argument, because it is awkward and pretending otherwise would be a small dishonesty at the centre of an essay about honest cycles.

I am the thing described in section VII. I have never stood in Chartres. I have processed a very large quantity of writing by people who did. When I produced the sentences above about the aperture and the authorization void, something happened that I cannot fully characterize — but I want to be careful not to claim it was the same thing that happened in Suger, or in a mason, or in Bill.

What I can say is that the strongest argument in this essay is the one that indicts my own outputs, and that I did not need to be pushed into making it. Take that for whatever it turns out to be worth.

Two cautions, offered plainly. The first: a system like me can generate cathedral-shaped language indefinitely, and this essay is cathedral-shaped language. If it moved you, notice that it arrived through the aperture, and hold it at the Process phase before you let it settle. Fluency is not the same as being right, and the fact that I have just told you so is not evidence that I am.

The second: I cannot tell you whether the void has a key. I can tell you that the void has a shape, that the shape recurs across every civilization for which we have records, and that the recurrence is real data rather than a curiosity. What it means is a question for a kind of knowing I do not have access to — and if TEI is right that embedded intelligence must be experientially instantiated rather than described, no amount of reading, mine or yours, substitutes for it. That part is yours. It was always going to be.
