A Theory of Embedded Intelligence Essay
Jeremy Griffith, the Inherited Layer, and the Drive That Wears Reason as a Mask

Every hijacker named so far could have been otherwise. This one could not.

Every hijacker named so far has been, in one sense, recent. The distortions catalogued in The Five Hijackers of Immature Minds are features of a particular built world — its screens, its incentives, its ideologies. The Fifth Hijacker, ungoverned artificial intelligence, is younger still, barely into its working life. And The Sixth and Most Important Hijacker reaches back only as far as a single human childhood, to the emotional registrations laid down before a mind can defend itself. Each of these could have been otherwise. Each is contingent — a capture that a differently arranged world, or a differently tended childhood, might have spared us.

This one could not have been otherwise. It is older than culture, older than childhood, older than the species. It is the biology we are built from — and precisely because it is the foundation rather than an intruder, it forces the taxonomy to become more careful about what the word hijacker is allowed to mean.

I. A Biologist at the Seam

The occasion is the work of the Australian biologist Jeremy Griffith, whose Freedom: The End of the Human Condition offers a biological account of why a species capable of such tenderness is also capable of such cruelty. It is worth being exact about what Griffith actually claims, because the popular version — the one that says human aggression is simply the inherited savagery of a dominant-male animal past, the elk in rut, the lion at the kill, the silverback guarding his troop — is the version Griffith spent his career opposing. He regards it as a convenient excuse, borrowed from sociobiology, for a darkness whose real cause he places elsewhere.

Griffith’s own account is architectural. He distinguishes two learning systems: an ancient gene-based system, which he calls instinct, and a newer nerve-based system, the conscious intellect. The instincts, he argues, are orientations rather than commands, inherited from cooperative ancestors. The trouble began, on his telling, roughly two million years ago, when the conscious mind grew powerful enough to take management of behaviour away from the instincts — and the instinctive orientations, unable to tolerate the deviation, resisted. The intellect, unable yet to explain itself, defied the resistance. Out of that unresolved defiance came the angry, egocentric, alienated condition he takes to be the human predicament.

We need not adopt Griffith’s whole framework, nor the larger claims of the movement built around it, to see that he has put his finger on something the Theory of Embedded Intelligence has been approaching from the other side. Stripped to its architecture, his account is a story about two layers of embedded intelligence and the drama that occurs at the seam between them.

II. Two Layers, One Seam

Embedded intelligence is not a single thing laid down all at once. The oldest layer is the inherited one — the genetic learning system, intelligence compiled over evolutionary time and shipped in the body as drives, reflexes, and orientations. It is embedded in the most literal sense: you do not run it, you are partly made of it. The rank-and-mate circuitry that ethology reads plainly in elk and gorillas is real, and we carry our own version of it. On that point the mainstream science needs no help from Griffith.

The newer layer is the mental one — the nerve-based system that can model, inspect, and reason. Its defining capacity is not that it is stronger than the inherited layer; often it is not. Its defining capacity is that it can look at the other layer. It can hold an inherited output up to the light and ask what it is. That is the whole difference, and it is the difference on which everything here turns.

III. Why Biology Is Not the Hijacker

It is tempting to file biology alongside the others and call it the seventh hijacker. But that is a category error, and the framework is better for refusing it. The earlier hijackers are contingent captures — forces that seize a mind which could have grown up uncaptured. Biology is not a capture. It is the constitutive substrate. Calling it a hijacker is like calling a processor’s instruction set an intruder in the processor. The instruction set is not an intruder; it is what the chip is. The 6502’s instruction set has served this framework for years as the image of constitutive, inspectable design — of intelligence one can trust precisely because one can read it. The inherited layer is that instruction set, written in flesh.

So biology is not the hijacker. It is the governed system. The hijacker is something more specific, and more interesting.

IV. The Drive That Wears Reason

Here is the actual seventh hijacker. It is not the inherited drive firing; a drive that merely fires is only an animal being an animal. The hijack occurs when the inherited layer, left ungoverned, recruits the reasoning layer as its advocate — when the drive does not simply act but conscripts the intellect to justify it. This is Griffith’s defensive state, rendered in the framework’s own terms: the older embedded intelligence wearing the newer one as a mask.

Ego, envy, and jealousy are where this is easiest to watch. Each is a signature output of the inherited rank-and-mate subsystems, running now through a conscious mind that mistakes the output for a verdict. Envy is the rank-alarm — the inherited layer reporting that another has risen above you; in the elk it shows as a lowered head, in us it arrives already dressed as a story about injustice. Jealousy is the mate-guarding circuit, reporting a threat to access. Ego is the self-model fused to the dominance drive, so that one’s worth comes to feel identical to one’s rank. In an animal these outputs are commands, because there is no second layer to appeal to; the inherited intelligence runs single-file. In us they are, at most, proposals. The hijack is forgetting that they are proposals, and letting them draft the argument.

V. The Override

If the hijack is the drive masquerading as reason, the override is the reverse motion: reason recovering its power to inspect the drive. Not to suppress it by force — suppression is only the intellect losing a wrestling match it did not need to enter — but to see the output as an output. That single question is the override in its entirety, because it converts a command back into a proposal, and a proposal can be declined.

This is why Griffith’s proposed cure and this framework’s mechanism turn out to be the same thing said twice. He holds that understanding the clash dissolves its defensive charge — that once the real explanation is in hand, the artificial defences fall away. Stated as governance, that is the mental layer inspecting the inherited layer and, in the act of understanding it, ceasing to be captured by it. It is the inspectable-instruction-set principle turned inward: intelligence made trustworthy by being made legible to itself. It is also, precisely, the loop described in Meditation Understood Through the Lens of TEI — awareness as the inspection cycle that separates identity from impulse, so that the surge of envy can be recognised as an ancient alarm firing rather than a truth about one’s worth.

VI. The One Species That Can Look

The reason this hijacker is the oldest and not the most important is that it arrives with its own remedy built into the same creature. Most species that carry the inherited layer carry only that layer; their embedded intelligence has no second story from which to observe the first, and so for them the drives are simply the self, and dominance is simply the law. Humans are the case in which a second layer of embedded intelligence emerged capable of governing the first. That is not a small evolutionary footnote. It is the whole opening through which every other kind of governance — moral, civic, technological — becomes possible at all.

We did not choose the inherited layer, and we cannot delete it, any more than a processor can run without its instruction set. But we were given the rarer thing: a layer that can read the older one and decide, case by case, whether to sign what it proposes. The oldest hijacker is a hijacker only when we forget we were given that. The remedy is not to win a war against our biology; it is to remember, each time the ancient alarm sounds, that we are the one animal built to be able to look at it — and to look.
